Fishing In The City
Apr 14 2018North Camino Alto
Fishing in the City is an event on Saturday, April 11th, 2015 where we teach 100 inner-city children how to fish. The Greater Vallejo Recreation District along with Vallejo Rotary, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife offer training stations and educational booths for the kids the morning of the program.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
We feel its important to teach our youth the value of taking care of our lakes and parks. Teaching these urban children how to fish makes many concepts physical and real to them. In addition to conservation, every child learns how to tie a hook onto a fishing line, bait a hook, and cast a fishing line. Many of the children catch fish to take home. Those who catch fish also learn an important lesson about the food chain and get a greater appreciation for hard work and patience. Every child goes home with a tackle box full of fishing equipment and a brain full of information.
Shortly before the event, we plant about 1500-2000 lbs of fish in a netted-off area of Lake Chabot for the youth to catch. This makes it very likely that each child will catch a fish or two.
We will start at 8:00am and go until 11:00am. After the nets are pulled at 11:00am, we have a BBQ and provide hot dogs for the participants and their families. Its a great day to fish and have fun in our community.
Fishing in the City takes place at the shore of Lake Chabot in Dan Foley Park on North Camino Alto in Vallejo, California.
